26A- Celebrating Failure

  1. A time I failed this semester: I am a photographer for a fashion magazine, and one of the shoots this semester was really difficult to shoot. As a team, we had failed to accurately execute the idea-- the makeup and styling was off, the location we had originally wanted fell through, the models were late, etc. Even more, I was frustrated during the shoot because I couldn't figure out the right lighting, find the right poses for the models, and more. We were certainly unprepared to do the shoot, but went on anyways. Normally, I'm quite proud of my work, but the photos from this shoot just turned out horrible. Needless to say, I was frustrated and felt defeated. Ultimately, we ended up reshooting the shoot. We went back the the drawing board, picked out new clothes, makeup, models and location to better represent our vision, and came with a better plan.
  2. What I learned from it: Failure is easy without the right planning and communication-- making execution difficult and frustrating. I learned that its just best to accept failure, and try again.
  3. Failure reflection:
    1. In general, failure is frustrating, but I'll be the first to admit I've experience tons of failure in my life. I've learned to overcome it by stepping aside from the project, taking a deep breathe, and going to bed. In the morning, I'll just brainstorm another approach and go from there.
    2. Failure is important to talk about with other because it helps you deal with negative emotions and starts a conversation for solutions.
    3. Our magazine has never needed to reshoot a photoshoot before; we had never failed until this shoot. However, we handled it maturely, and in the future we can be confident that we can pull off another idea if the first one isn't executed correctly.

  1. Hey,
Wow, I can imagine how hard it must have been to mess up that shoot, I know that it isn't easy to admit making a mistake let alone a mistake that could cost someone else money. When the failure is on you and really only majorly effects yourself it is easier to swallow but when it comes at a cost everything seems so much worse. So good on you for being able to recover from this and bounce back.

  2. Hi Andreanna,
I completely agree with you that sometimes you need to step away from a project to recollect your thoughts and come back to it later. Failure is something that everyone experiences at some point in their life or even multiple times. I feel like people need to take failure and use it as a motivator. People need to try again when they fail and not give up entirely. I think it was a really good thing that you and your team decided to reshoot instead of completely scrapping the project. I think you handle the situation very well.
